Photoshop is complicated.

Trust me, I get it. I've been there — the moments of frustration where nothing looks quite right, the constant feeling that your drawings on paper are (and always will be) SO much better than anything you can create digitally, the panic when some technical malfunction flushes your hours of work down the drain.

Here's the thing, though: digital art is a medium, just like any other, and it can be learned.

As artists and creatives, we're already a bit (okay, a lot) more self-critical than your average Jane or Joe. But the road to learning digital art doesn't need to be filled with frustration and keyboard smashing... you just need to learn the right methods.

But first... do any of these sound familiar?

  • You love the digital art you see from your favourite creators, but your own attempts at it feel amateur-ish.
  • You have tons of original character design ideas in your sketchbook, but your paper sketches don’t quite bring them to life... and you’ve never been quite comfortable or satisfied with your digital art attempts.
  • You feel like you can “hack” your way around digital art programs, but don’t have confidence in your ability to leverage the potential you know those programs have.
  • You find yourself giving up on practicing digital art because of discouragement, frustration, or overwhelm, and you feel like your improvement and productivity are slow (or non-existent).
  • When you look at the work of your favourite artists, you find yourself feeling demotivated instead of inspired.
  • You know you need to practice to improve... but you don’t know where to begin, and struggle to find a digital art guide that is comprehensive and inspirational.

You're not alone!

In fact, in this case, you’re downright ordinary. ;)

Just kidding... sort of. But seriously, as a primarily self-taught digital artist, I have felt each and every one of those things at some point. I understand what it feels like to have confidence in your artistic skill on paper… and then watch it flop when you try to translate it to a computer screen :/

This is especially frustrating when it’s a character design you’ve put lots of love and creativity into, and then they come out looking... wrong.

So many artists let their Photoshop-phobia hold them back from their true artistic potential...

...I want to keep you from being one of them.
Introducing...

Master the technical fundamentals of using Photoshop for character design in four weeks of digital art video tutorials & walkthroughs.

Intro to Photoshop

Imagine opening Photoshop and knowing exactly where to begin...

...that's the goal of this module.

All those buttons and tabs and panels? Here's where you'll learn which ones are important, what they do, and how to use them.

Lineart

Shaky, bland outlines got you down? This module covers how to overcome those issues and quickly create consistently smooth outlines.

The goal of this module is for you to be able to create gorgeous designs full of personality before adding even a pixel of colour.

Colouring

Time to add a splash of colour! Okay, make that several splashes :)

This module goes over adding base colour, using brushes to achieve different creative effects, and maximizing your use of layers to truly take advantage of the benefits that working digitally provides.

Shading

This module ties it all together with gorgeous contouring and highlights.

Covers basic shading techniques and do's & don'ts, as well as comparing and contrasting different approaches to demonstrate the drastic effects that various shading styles can have on a piece.

Praise for Olivya's other resources:

...[Olivya has] opened me the door to a whole new world. Digital art has been introduced to me with an easy step by step tutorial, with clear images that help me find myself in Photoshop. The way she planned the steps has felt like if she was here, standing by my side, teaching to me.

Who am I?

Hey! I'm Olivya. My passion for digital art began as a pre-teen on Neopets (who else remembers those days?), and to be honest, I never really grew out of it. As time goes on my love for digital art only continues to grow, having had an incredibly strong influence on my life both creatively and academically — I hold a university degree in Interactive Arts & Technology and Business, which is a bit of a fancy title for what essentially boils down to me being an accredited artistic geek :)

I know that there's no shortage of love for digital art from creatives online, and many artists (like you!) want to learn how to take their work digital. I also know that many are discouraged by the complexity of the programs and lack of comprehensive learning materials.

As a result, I've made it my goal to teach digital art & illustration with clear, easy-to-follow tutorials, so that it's inspiring instead of overwhelming. I know the benefits and advantages that digital art brings, and I want to open this medium up to other artists who want to learn, and in doing so bypass the often frustrating learning curve one faces when trying to figure it all out on their own. Hence, this course was born :)

Praise for Olivya's other resources:

Being a tiny bit familiar with Illustrator I have always been terrified of Photoshop but [Olivya's Digital Art Fundamentals e-course] was just what I needed to bridge the gap... I will be keeping tabs on upcoming tutorials and recommending them to any friends who are ready but unsure how to make the push to digital! Five stars!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a "pre-sale"?

In this case, 'pre-sale' means that you are purchasing this course before the content is officially released. In exchange for your early purchase, you are receiving this course at a much lower price than it will be offered at in the future.

The first module for this course (Intro to Photoshop) will be released June 6th, the second module (Lineart) on June 13th, the third module (Colouring) on June 20th, and the fourth module (Shading) on June 27th.

How long do I have access to the course content?

How does lifetime access sound!? :) After purchasing the course, you’ll always have access to the content, as well as any future updates that are made to the material. Therefore, you can complete this course entirely at your own pace, and re-visit the content whenever you need to.

How is the course content delivered?

The primary mode of instruction for this course will be tutorial videos, which you'll have lifetime access to and can watch and re-watch as many times as you like! These videos will include screen recordings of exactly what I'm doing in Photoshop, accompanied by a detailed voiceover. This allows you to follow along in Photoshop and gain a confident understanding of each step through visual demonstration and auditory explanation.

What equipment or software do I need for this course?

You need access to Adobe Photoshop and a computer that can run it. Adobe Photoshop CC, the most recent version, offers a 7-day free trial, and after that is a monthly subscription for $9.99 USD per month (which I honestly think is a very reasonable price for such an advanced, industry-standard program — especially if you’re serious about leveling up your digital art skills!).

I recommend that you use Adobe Photoshop CC to complete this course, but as long as your version of Photoshop is version 7.0 or later, it should work. However, by using a version other than CC you acknowledge that there may be some discrepancies between the versions.

Is this course suitable for complete beginners to digital art?

YES! In fact, that is who it is intended for. I intentionally start from the very basics and gradually get more advanced from there.

Do I need a digital art tablet for this course?

There are sections of those course that will absolutely be easier with a tablet pen, and I definitely recommend getting one eventually if you’re serious about levelling up your digital art skills. That being said, I’ve seen incredible things done with just a mouse, and there is still a lot of value and skills you can get out of this course even if you don’t have a tablet pen yet.

If you don’t have a tablet pen currently, but are hoping to get one in the future, I would recommend purchasing the course now while it’s at the current price. This is because you can always come back to certain lessons in the future once you do have a tablet pen (remember, you have lifetime access to the content!). If you wait to purchase, there is no guarantee that the price won’t increase, nor is there a guarantee of how soon the doors to this course might open again.

It’s a bit expensive. Can’t I figure this out on my own?

Hey, maybe! If you really think you’d be better off learning digital art on your own, that is absolutely your prerogative. What I will say is that it will almost certainly take you much, much longer to figure it out on your own.

I understand this course is an investment, but what you are paying for is a professional, comprehensive course that is packaged up for you in a logical, step-by-step order, specifically designed to bypass the lengthy learning curve of trying to figure it out on your own. My exact goal in creating this course is to save you the hours upon hours of trial-and-error and frustration, by teaching you the correct methods the first time around. I want to get you to a place of being able to confidently practice and improve your skills sooner.

Your time has value. This is especially relevant if your ultimate goal is to use these skills as a freelance artist or designer, and therefore make your own profits as a creative entrepreneur — in that case, you could be making back the value of this course (and then some) in a very short time.

Finally, there is something to be said in investing in yourself, your skills, and your time. The very act of investing in your own learning sets you up mentally for success, because you are subconsciously telling yourself that your artistic passion is worth it!

What level of drawing skill do I need to take this course?

You’ll likely get the most out of this course if you have some level of familiarity and confidence with drawing traditionally (when I say “drawing traditionally”, I mean with pencil & paper). That level of confidence varies widely on an artist by artist basis. That being said, improvement is a never-ending process, so it’s not like you’ll ever be “done” improving your traditional drawing and thus “ready” to move on to digital. They are skills that can and should be nurtured and improved in tandem with one another.

The general consensus is that it is easier to transition to digital art if you already have some experience with traditional drawing. The good thing is, you have lifetime access to this course after you buy it, so there isn’t any rush to complete it immediately if you feel you still have some practicing to do.

Also, this course focuses on the technical skills needed for digital art. That doesn’t mean you can’t be practicing your traditional drawing at the same time (in fact, you should always be practicing both skills). This means that, in theory, you’ll still be able to gain a lot from the technical trainings in this course even if you’re still improving your traditional art skills during the process. And you can, of course, return to the lessons at any point you choose if you feel like you want to re-do them with renewed drawing confidence :)

How often will enrollment be open for this course? Do I have to sign up right now?

This is the pilot launch of this course, and I don’t know how often enrollment will open up yet! What I will say is that the price will increase in the future, and so purchasing sooner rather than later is your only guarantee of receiving it at the current price.

What is the refund policy?

I don't want you to be unsatisfied! You may request a refund for up to 10 days after the first module is released on June 6th (no refunds will be granted prior to June 6th). This time period allows you to watch the first and second modules (to be released June 6th & 13th respectively) and decide if the course is right for you.
